Monarchs rule in Cobb Classic 2, Majors Tournament

The 14U Medlock Monarchs proved unstoppable recently in the Cobb Classic 2, Majors Tournament, rolling over four teams to win first prize.

The Monarchs scored a total 22 runs during four games in the April 27-29 event in Marietta. They gave up 11. In the championship, they allowed none.

The Monarchs got started early April 28, a bright and cool Saturday. First up: Fury Baseball. In short order, the Monarchs pulled ahead of the boys in light blue, winning 8-4.

The Monarchs had a brief rest before meeting another Fury team, Performance.  The final: another 8-4 win.

The Monarchs came back late Sunday morning. They had two games to win.

In their first match, they played the West Georgia Braves. For seven innings, the Monarchs’ out-defended the Braves with exemplary play that left multiple Braves’ runners stranded on base. The Monarchs came away with a 3-2 win. It was the sort of game that makes losing coaches stop by the liquor store on their way home.

The final game pitted the Monarchs against the guys they beat the day before – Fury Performance. Medlock won in a shutout, 3-0. That clinched it.

The Medlock boys, smudged and smiling, accepted medallions proclaiming them champs. A dust devil spun across second base as they shook hands with the Fury guys. It was a fine moment. Even Coach Marcus Shoemake smiled.

A few performances stand out. In the third game, Cal Forde pitched six innings, striking out 11. Cole Turner took the mound in game 4, going four innings – the last inning, he later discovered, with a fractured thumb on his pitching hand. In three games, Taylor Flowers was the closer, his pitches flat and fast.

The Monarchs turned at least two crisp double plays, too. The outfielding was nearly flawless.

Next up: Spring Fling, a massive gathering of teams. The tournament takes place May 4-6.
