League Descriptions
6U:
This is for girls aged 5 and 6 as of January 1.
- The focus of this league is on fundamentals: throwing/catching/hitting.
- Games are coach pitch.
- Girls will use a 10" ball.
- Expect one practice, and one game per week, usually with the practice on Saturday and the game on Sunday.
- Games and most, if not all, practices will be at First Baptist Church.
8U:
This is for girls aged 7 and 8 as of January 1.
- The league continues to work on fundamentals, while beginning some work on defensive situations and base running.
- Games are still coach pitch.
- Girls now use an 11" ball.
- Expect one weeknight practice, and one game per week, usually on Saturdays.
- Games and most, if not all, practices will be at Medlock Park.
10U:
This league is for 9 and 10 year old girls as of January 1.
- We are still focusing on fundamentals, but in 10U we start girl pitch with an 11" ball from 35 ft.
- We use coach "rescue pitchers" as well. Having rescue pitchers mean no one gets walked, unless they are hit by a pitch from a girl. This keeps the game moving while still allowing for pitching to develop.
- Players are also allowed to steal 2nd and 3rd when the ball gets past the catcher.
- Players have one weeknight practice and one game per week, usually on Saturdays but with some Sunday games.
- All games and most practices will be at First Baptist Church.
12U (Spring):
This league is for 11 and 12 year old girls as of January 1
- This league is entirely girl pitch. We do not have rescue pitchers in 12U.
- Pitching distance moves back 5 feet and the girls transition to a 12" softball.
- Stealing is allowed.
- Players have one weeknight practice and one game per week, usually on Saturdays.
Middle School League (Fall):
This is our 12U league, but in the fall. This league is available in the fall for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls, regardless of their age.
- The same rules from our 12U league apply, but we align players based on their middle school, or designated high school.
- If your school does not have enough players to form a full team, we have combination teams.
- Middle School games are usually on Sundays.
- Practices will be at Oakhurst, First Baptist Church, and Lakeside High School depending on the team (e.g., Decatur Middle school will likely practice at Oakhurst).
All-Star/Select Softball:
is a competitive program in which more highly skilled DHYS rec players compete as teams against other, similar teams in interleague games and tournaments throughout the year. Once a team is selected in the spring, it will continue as the All-star/Select team into the summer, etc. until the next tryouts are held. For more information, click here.
